Karl May & Co.
October 22, 2023
Next year, the Landesbühnen Sachsen will present "Shatterhand", a new play "loosely based on Karl May", written by stunt coordinator Holger Kahl.
For the title role, the Landesbühne are relying on a
well-known name in the scene: Sascha Gluth. For years he played Klaus
Störtebeker on Rügen and was seen for two years as "Old Shatterhand"
in Bad Segeberg. He has already been engaged at the Landesbühne three times
before, most recently in 2015/2016. In the press release, Gluth is quoted as
saying: "After two seasons as 'Old Shatterhand' in Bad Segeberg, I have a
very special relationship with this role and look forward to meeting well-known
and dear colleagues in Rathen in 2024." Michael Berndt-Cananá from the
acting ensemble of the Landesbühnen Sachsen will play "Winnetou"
again. The director is Artistic Director Manuel Schöbel.
The year is 1879. In El Paso, Texas, Old Shatterhand witnesses hostilities between Apaches, Comanches, and white settlers. A peace treaty is supposed to settle the conflict. The shady businessman Coleman and his accomplices try by all means to prevent this. Old Shatterhand and his blood brother Winnetou have their hands full trying to keep the peace.
If one follows May's words, Winnetou could no longer play a role in the production, as he is said to have died in 1874. The content known so far also does not sound like the special fidelity to the work, for which Rathen has been known for decades.
After the heated "Winnetou debate", people in Radebeul had been struggling for a long time as to how Karl May could be brought to the stage. Among other things, they work together with the Karl May Museum, and there is also an accompanying program:
The performances will be accompanied by a supporting programme on contemporary indigenous culture from North America, presented by the Landesbühnen Sachsen and the Karl-May-Museum Radebeul: Under the title "Turtle Island", a wide variety of events by indigenous guests and artists are planned from 16 to 25 May 2024 in the spa town of Rathen and in Radebeul, including a panel discussion on cultural understanding and understanding in the Karl May Museum and an exhibition with Works by contemporary North American indigenous artists in Rathen's "Haus des Gastes". Cultural mediator, actor and performer Kendall Old Elk from the Apsaloka people from Montana will take you into the world of indigenous customs, dances and songs from North America in two shows on May 24 and 25 at the Felsenbühne Rathen. On the way through the health resort, interested parties can see and purchase selected products from indigenous craftsmen beyond mainstream and industrial production on these two days. Art education workshops are also planned, which will take place in schools in the districts of Pirna and Meissen in the week from 13 to 17 May.
The premiere is on May 18, 2024.
