Who Are Those Composers ~ Charly Niessen



Karl ‘Charly’ Niessen was born in Vienna Austria on August 22, 1923, He studied music and theater in Vienna, Weimar and Jena. After World War II he worked as a pianist in the "Kleinkunst am Naschmarkt". He then went to the American Broadcasting Corporation (ECA) in Paris and then to Berlin, where he worked in cabaret in 1952. That same year he came to Berlin, Germany and wrote for Die Stachelschweine. It was there he was discovered by Heino Gaze. Niessen and achieved success in schlager music, a style of popular music which appeared at the beginning of the 20th Century, in the late 1950s and early 1960s.Gaze brought him to Peter Schaeffers, the music publisher, who gave him a room in his office with a piano and telephone and said: Now do it! Niessen did it. Sometimes only the music, sometimes both but he composed more than 1500 songs, including 36 film scores, six musicals and a lot of television shows were created. He worked with some eighty orchestras and more than 200 performers.

Niessen at one time was the husband of actress Claudia Wedekind.

Charly Niesse died in Prien am Chiemsee, Bavaria, Germany from a heart attack on February 21, 1990.
