Who Are Those Singers & Musicians? ~ Shani Wallis

Shani Wallis is an English actress and singer renowned for her role as Nancy in the 1968 film adaptation of the musical “Oliver!”

Born in Tottenham, North London on April 14, 1933, to James Wallis, a World War I veteran who was deaf, and his wife Ethel, Wallis began performing at age four with tap dancing lessons and later trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where she was one of only two working-class women in her year to secure West End roles immediately after graduation. Her early career included a theatrical debut in “Call Me Madam” at the London Coliseum and releasing several pop records in the 1950s, establishing her as a versatile musical performer in the UK.

Wallis's breakthrough came with her iconic portrayal of the resilient yet tragic Nancy in “Oliver!”, directed by Carol Reed, which earned the film multiple Academy Awards and showcased her powerful vocals in songs like "As Long as He Needs Me." Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, she collaborated with luminaries such as Charlie Chaplin, who wrote a song for her that she sang in “A King in New York” (1957), Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, and Benny Hill, while performing in films, television, and stage productions across the UK and the United States. In later years, she toured extensively with Liberace for five years, appeared in American soap opera ‘The Young and the Restless’ (2004) for six episodes, and starred in the independent film “Mojave Phone Booth” (2006), alongside continued theatre work in musicals like “42nd Street” and “Follies”.

Wallis married American actor and producer Bernie Rich in 1968, with whom she had a daughter, Rebecca, and two grandchildren; she was widowed in 2016 and resides in West Los Angeles, California, where she has become a naturalized U.S. citizen. Now in her early 90s, she remains connected to her “Oliver!” castmates, has publicly commented on contemporary adaptations of the musical, emphasizing its enduring legacy, and in October 2025, at age 92, auditioned for Britain's Got Talent, receiving praise from the judges.
