Voices of the Spaghetti Western - “Fury of Johnny Kid”

As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films were shot silent and then dubbed into the various languages where they were sold for distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to be paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.

I’ll list a Euro-western and the (I) Italian, (S) Spanish, (G) German and (F) French, (E) English voices that I can find and once in a while a bio on a specific voice actor as in Europe these actors are as well-known as the actors they voiced.

Diether Krebs  (1947 – 2000)

Diether Krebs was born in Essen, Germany on August 11, 1947. Hegrew up as the son of the merchant Herbert Krebs and his wife Ingeborg, née Kenter, in Essen. There, his parents ran a shop for office supplies and stationery in Kurfürstenstraße. The difficult times of the immediate post-war period also affected him and his relatives. At the age of 15, he was sent to a village in the countryside. The teenager enjoyed life in the village and quickly made contacts. His experiences there have been imprinted in his memory and he later processed experiences from this time in his sketches.

During his school days at the Humboldt Gymnasium in Essen, Krebs gained his first theatre experience and belonged to an amateur play group. As he became more and more interested in acting and theatre, he dropped out of high school and began training as an actor at the Folkwang University in Essen-Werden. He got his first engagement in 1970 at the Stadttheater Oberhausen, where he appeared in the role of a clown. Another engagement took him to the Schauspielhaus Bochum under Peter Zadek in 1971. At the house, he was able to show that he was also convincing in serious and political roles.

Krebs gained attention in 1973 in Wolfgang Menge's television series ‘Ein Herz und eine Seele’ through his role as the brash "Sozi" son-in-law "Michael Graf" of "Alfred Tetzlaff" (Heinz Schubert). His girlfriend at the time, Hildegard Krekel, played his wife and had brought him to this role.

In the following years he appeared on stage in television and film roles as a presenter, singer and voice actor. A heavy smoker throughout his life, died in the night of January 4-5 2000 at the age of 52 from lung cancer.
