Spaghetti Western Trivia ~ The Man With No Name’s Poncho

We’ve heard the tale for many years that there was only one poncho used by Clint Eastwood as the Man With No Name in Sergio Leone’s ‘Dollar Trilogy’ and that Clint was put in charge of taking care of it. When the Sergio Leone exhibit was first opened in Los Angeles in 2005 at the Autry Museum the poncho was borrowed from Eastwood by Sir Christopher Frayling who was in charge of the exhibit and displays. He related to me over dinner that when he and one of curators at the Autry went to see Clint he said sure they could display the poncho. When asked where it was he told them it was in a duffle bag in the back bedroom of his home. They went with Clint to the bedroom and Clint brought out the duffle bag and gave them the poncho. He told them it had never been washed. Inspecting the poncho Frayling validated it as being the real thing because the bullet holes that were exacted by Ramon’s firing into it in “A Fistful of Dollars” were there sewn closed so the garment could be used again in “For a Few Dollars More” and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”.
