Two Confederates a private and a sergeant, Ringo and Gringo, are living alone in an abandoned fort unaware that the Civil War has ended and their regiment has been disbanded. Demolition of their fort begins ​​with dynamite explosions by railway workers belonging to a railway company that bought the land, forcing them to run away with the conviction that they had suffered a military assault. A chance meeting with Carolina and Virginia, two more fervent Confederates, are waging a private war, rescue the two soldiers which leads them to a series of guerrilla actions against regular troops. Helped by luck and because of their ineptitude, their actions have caused a lot of confusion and give the impression to the government that the revolt broke out in a consistent form. The president finds it necessary to send troop into the territory to save lives. After their exploits, and finally aware the war has ended, Ringo and Gringo not only avoid the firing squad but are enlisted into the regular U.S. army and laden with honors.
