Remembering John Sturges
Born John Elliot Sturges on January 3, 1910 in Oak Park, Illinois he started his film career as a film editor. During World War II he directed documentaries and training films for the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1946 he made his first film “The Man Who Dared”. His career was full of hits and misses. His greatest success came in action movies such as “Bad Day at Black Rock” ('55), “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral” ('57), “The Great Escape” ('63) and “Ice Station Zebra” ('68). But he is probably remembered for one film more then any other “The Magnificent 7” which gratefully influenced the Spaghetti Western genre. Sadly Struges made only one Euro-western “Chino” with Charles Bronson. John Struges died in San Luis Obispo, California on Augst 18, 1992. Today we remember him on what would have been his 100th birthday.
