Pioneers invade and settle on the land of the Aricara Indians. Asked to leave the sacred land they decide if they can’t settle the land they can at least make a profit by selling the Indians weapons and whiskey. The Aricara Chief Black Cloud has had enough of the white man’s treachery and arranges a massacre of the settlers. Joe and his family are among those who are killed in the attack. Joe’s two children survive with George wandering off in shock and Kathy kidnapped by Black Cloud and raised as his own daughter and renamed Loana. Several years later George enlists in the Confederate Army, while Loana remains with the Indians trying to get the Indians and Whites to live in peace and to stop the hatred between the races. Casually the two children, now young adults, meet some years later and George realizes the pointlessness of war and of the resentment for the American natives. Finally the two sides come together but not before Loana is shot and dies.
