Voices of the Spaghetti Western ~ “The Return of Ringo”

As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films were shot silent and then dubbed into the various languages where they were sold for distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.

I’ll list a Euro-western and the (I) Italian, (S) Spanish, (G) German and (F) French, (E) English voices that I can find and once in a while a bio on a specific voice actor as in Europe these actors are as well-known as the actors they voiced.

Thomas Eckelmann  (19?? –      )

Thomas Eckelmann worked as a theater actor in various Berlin theaters such as the Forum Theater and the Berlin Theater. Occasionally he also took on roles in film and television productions such as in Egon Monk's east-west drama Preis der Freiheit and in the Edgar Wallace crime thriller Der Zinker as well as in television series such as Jedermannstrasse 11 .

However, Eckelmann became known to a wide audience through his work as a speaker for radio and film dubbing . For several years he was the German regular speaker of Pierre Brice, for whom he replaced Christian Wolff in Winnetou Part 2 . He also spoke for Brice in six other Karl May film adaptations Frontier Hellcat, Rampage at Apache Wells, Desperado Trail, Flaming Frontier, The HalfBreed Apanatschi , Man With the Long Gun as well as in the Western A Place Called Glory. In addition, he lent his voice to numerous other internationally known actors such as Richard Benjamin in Catch 22, Dean Jones in Blackbeard’s Ghost,Russ Tamblyn in West Side Story and Steve McQueen in Nevada Smith.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Eckelmann retired from the job and moved to India, where he started a new life. Since then, 1972 has been incorrectly reported in various sources as the alleged date of death. Since 2006 he has been living in Berlin again.
