Spaghetti Western Location ~ Carazo / Majada de las merinas

On the broad top of a hill (1,200 meters above sea level) known as "Majada de las merinas", a few hundred meters northwest of the village of Carazo, a small town ten kilometers south of Salas de los Infantes, was built the set of the Union concentration camp of Betterville, in which the stars of the film are interspersed: Blonde (Clint Eastwood) and Tuco (Eli Wallach).

In the area, dominated to the east by the majestic walls of Soncarazo or Pena Villanueva (the eastern part of the Sierra de Carazo or Meseta de Carazo), and built, with the collaboration of departments of the Spanish army stationed in Burgos, a rectangular palisade (meters 125 x 110), surrounded by a moat six meters wide and two and a half deep, which encloses a large dusty area in which the southern prisoners are imprisoned an
impressive set (which is clearly legible from aerial photography.

About fifty meters further north are the remains (brick stone bases) of the four log buildings that stood outside the palisade, including the one in which the torture of Tuco is
carried out by Corporal Wallace (Mario Brega) takes place for Sergeant Sentenza (Lee Van Cleef).

  1. I bet you can still film there as long as it's not on private property.
