Little Known Spaghetti Western Actors ~ Stan Carnes

[These daily posts will cover little known actors or people that have appeared in more recent films and TV series. Various degrees of information that I was able to find will be given and anything that you can add would be appreciated.]

Ivan Stanley ‘Stan’ Carnes was born in 1976 and lives in Arizona where he’s appeared in three Euro-westerns: “Strong Arm of the Law” in 2013 as an outlaw, “Vengeance Is the Lord's” in 2016 as a cowboy and in 2017’s “Thirst for Revenge”

Voices of the Spaghetti western ~ “3 Graves for a Winchester”

As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films were shot silent and then dubbed into the various languages where they were sold for distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to be paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.

I’ll list a Euro-western and the (I) Italian, (S) Spanish, (G) German and (F) French, (E) English voices that I can find and once in a while a bio on a specific voice actor as in Europe these actors are as well-known as the actors they voiced.

Claus Holm  (1918 – 1996)

Claus Holm was born in Bochum-Werne, Germany on August 4, 1918. He was a miner for three years and became a boxing champion in 1937. He began his acting career in Berlin in the mid-1940s. After the end of the war, he helped build up the Altmärkisches Theater in Salzwedel and was soon also in front of the camera for DEFA. He said the 1947 film drama “Ehe im Schatten” (Marriage in the Shadow) by Kurt Maetzig as one of his most important films. He also played at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm.

In 1953, Holm fled from the GDR to the West, where he soon returned to theatre, and had been a member of the ensemble of the Staatliche Schauspielbühnen Berlin since Boleslaw Barlog's directorship. During this time, he also sought roles as a film actor. In the 1950s, for example, he starred in some Heimatfilms. In 1957, Holm portrayed Inspector Axel Kersten in the Oscar-nominated film “Nachts, wenn der Teufel kam” and had a role in 1959’s Fritz Lang's remakes of “Der Tiger von Eschnapur” and “Das indische Grabmal”. He also appeared in three Edgar Wallace films.

From the mid-1960s, Holm mainly played in the theater. On television, he appeared in 1966 in the German science fiction television series ‘Raumpatrouille Orion’ as flight engineer Hasso Sigbjörnson. In the period after that, he appeared in only a few films, including Rainer Werner Fassbinder's television adaptation ‘Berlin Alexanderplatz’ in 1980.

Holm lived a very secluded life. He died on September 21, 1996, at the age of 78 in Berlin. He iss buried next to his wife, the singer Dagmar Holm née Stech [1918–1988], in the state-owned cemetery Heerstraße in today's Berlin-Westend district.

RIP Ron Ely

 

American film, TV actor and author died in Santa Barbara, California on September 29^th. His daughter Kirsten reported his death to the media on October 23^rd. Ron was 86. Most remembered for playing TV’s Tarzan in 1966 replacing Mike Henry. The show ran 57 episodes. Ely also hosted the Miss America pageant in 1980 and 1981. Ronald Pierce Ely was born on June 21, 1938, in Hereford, Texas. He graduated from Amarillo (Texas) High School in 1956 and then attended the University of Texas at Austin for a year before heading to California. He made his screen debut playing a pilot in the 1958 film adaptation of “South Pacific”, then signed a contract with 20th Century Fox. He was mostly remembered for his several TV series including ‘The Aquanauts’ 1960-1961 and ‘Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze’ (1975). He became a writer of mystery novels, featuring the character Jake Sands Night Shadows 1994 East Beach 1995. On October 15, 2019, his son, 30-year-old Cameron Ely, stabbed his 62-year-old mother, Valerie Ely, to death. Ron and Valerie had been married approximately 35 years. Cameron Ely was shot to death by sheriff's deputies later that evening. He was unarmed and his father unsuccessfully filed charges over the shooting. No charges were filed against the deputies. Ron appeared in two Euro-westerns: “Alleluia and Sartana, Sons of God” 1972 as Alleluia/Hallelujah, and “Cry of the Black Wolves” 1972 as Bill Robin/Robinson.

Little Known Spaghetti Western Actors ~ Gunnar Carlström

Gunnar Carlström was born in Sweden on April 17, 1983. He attended and graduated from Teknikum high school in 2002 and then studied at Linnéuniversitetet, Kalmar. He’s also attended several theatrical schools perfecting his craft as an actor, singer and musician.

While working at the High Chaparral Wild West Theme Park near Värnamo, Sweden he appeared in two Euro-westerns. “Danny Lou & Donna Starr” in 2016 as Mister Maggot and in 2017’s “Peggy Ray” as Doctor Blue.
