With this book, the authors, Javier Ramos and Ángel
Caldito, show us the important role that Madrid had in the development of the
cinematographic subgenre known as the spaghetti-western. Usually associated
with Almería, few people know that more than 200 westerns were filmed, totally
or partially, in the Community of Madrid. In fact, Madrid can be considered the
place where the boom of this popular film genre was unleashed thanks to the
shooting, in Hoyo de Manzanares, of the film Por un puñado de dólares (Fistful
of Dollars) (Sergio Leone, 1964). La Pedriza, Colmenar Viejo, Hoyo de
Manzanares, Ciempozuelos, Titulcia, Algete ... were common scenarios where
cowboys, Indians, soldiers or Mexican bandits rode. In Madrid, there were three
large towns in the West, several temporary settlements, four fortresses and
dozens of ranches and cabins. Today, there are hardly any remains of these
places and almost nobody remembers that they existed. The aim of the book is to
remember these places and that fans of the genre can visit them. It also pays a
small tribute to all Madrid, artists, technicians and companies whose names
appear in the titles of many spaghetti-western. The book includes nearly 400
color photographs and a prologue by José Luis Galicia, a film decorator and one
of the builders of the western town of Hoyo de Manzanares.
