Remembering Willy Dehmel


Willy Dehmel was born on February 26, 1909 in Berlin, Germany. Dehmel studied Theatre in Berlin, where he also took acting lessons. His musical career began as a pianist in silent movie theaters and worked for various dance bands.  In 1931 he began working as a lyricist with composer Franz Grothe, his cousin, and soon became his main lyricist. From this congenial cooperation they produced over 5 songs for films from 1933-1961. Among the most important performers they worked with included Marta Eggert, Willi Forst, Johannes Heesters, Lilian Harvey, Kirsten Heiberg, Lizzi Waldmuller and Marika Rokk. Dehmel co-wrote the score for one Euro-western, “Johnny Saves Nebrador” (1953) starring Hans Albers.
 
Since 1950 he was a member of the supervisory board of GEMA. He was also president of the German Lyricists Association.
 
Dehmel died in Bad Weissee, Bavaria, Germany on June 15, 1971.

Today we remember Willy Dehmel on what would have been his 105th birthday.
