Danish National Cinematheque Red Western Film Festival January 4 – 28, 2012
From 1924 until the fall of 1989, a large number of Western movies were made behind the Iron Curtain. In these westerns the heroes were red - the Indians and Communists. See some of them in January!
“The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks” (1924) was the first Soviet film with a western theme. In contrast to the later acclaimed 'Red Westerns' films, Hollywood, and Mr. West and his straddled cowboy serves Jeddy the film's heroes.
From 1964 on, other cowboy movies were produced in countries like the GDR, Romania and Czechoslovakia. The East German “Sons of Great Bear” from 1966 was the start of a long series of Indian 'films', issued by the state production company DEFA, whose Western-era ended with “The Scout” in 1983. The films depict Indians as heroes and the real savages are the white man and the U.S. government as the villains.
The Czechoslovak western parody “Lemonade Joe” won an award in San Sebastian and became popular in the West. The story of a lemonade drinking Gunslinger who take a stand against a whole town full of cowboys who swear by whiskey - and therefore shoot poorly – which was also distributed in Denmark. "Dazzling film art, but distasteful propaganda" was the headline in BT's claim, where Rolf Bagger concluded: "How could it have been much stronger in its attack on America, if it had not fallen for the primitive anti- Americanism, which now makes it popular for the redeemed. '"
'Lemonade Joe' success in the West was an exception. The other red westerns were only seen in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, where they in turn were very popular.
