Spanish production designer, art director, film actor José
Luis Galicia died in Madrid on June 5, 2025, at the age of 95. Born in Madrid
as José Luis Galicia Gonzalo on May 31, 1930, he was an indispensable figure of
art and cinema. A painter with works at the Queen Sofia Museum, he decorated
Golden City and the Confederate fort in Colmenar Viejo for “The Legend of
Frenchie King”. He was a close friend of Pablo Picasso, sculptor, poet and,
above all, a master of production design. He worked in art direction and on
sets of nearly 200 films, including some of the best European westerns ever
shot. The older brother of actress María Luz Galicia Gonzalo [1940- ], he acted
in 1962’s “The Terrible Sheriff and as himself in the 2023 documentary “The
Magnificent Stranger”.
