Voices of the Spaghetti Western – “Vengeance of Pancho Villa”

As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films were shot silent and then dubbed into the various languages where they were sold for distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to be paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.

I’ll list a Euro-western and the (I) Italian, (S) Spanish, (G) German and (F) French, (E) English voices that I can find and once in a while a bio on a specific voice actor as in Europe these actors are as well-known as the actors they voiced.

Julio Núñez  (1930 – 2008)

Julio Núñez was born on June 30, 1930, in Torrelavega, Cantabria, Spain. He began his acting career with the Santander University Theater Group and acting in various plays on the radio. With the Lope de Vega Company. He debuted as a film actor in the 1950s, practically at the same time as a voice actor, work in which he lent his voice to Peter O'Toole, Jack Palance and Omar Sharif, and on television in the series ‘Dynasty’, where he dubbed the character of Blake Carrington (John Forsythe), replacing Francisco Sánchez, and was also the substitute for José Martínez Blanco as the voice of Gavin MacLeod in the series ‘Vacaciones en el mar’. Another dubbing that made him very popular was that of Claude Akins in his role as ‘Sheriff Lobo’. He came to the world of dubbing by the hand of Vicente Bañó.

Apart from the aforementioned actors, he dubbed Anthony Quinn, Tony Amendola, Philip Baker Hall, Vittorio Gassman, Ernest Borgnine, Peter Falk, Alfred Hitchcock, Hal Holbrook, Christopher Lee, George C. Scott, Max von Sydow, George Wallace... He doubled in more than 2000 titles.

Julio Núñez died of heart failure in Madrid on January 17, 2008. He was 77 years old.
