Little Known Spaghetti Western Actors ~ Ernest A. Douglas

Ernest A. Douglas was a British silent film actor known for his prolific work in U.K. cinema throughout the 1910s and 1920s. He regularly took on supporting and character roles in British productions, often portraying authoritative or historical figures during the height of the silent era.

Douglas began his career on the stage, appearing in productions such as the racing drama “Nowadays, A Tale of the Turf” by Wilson Barrett, performed by Messrs Cuthbert and Cobbe's company on 21 October 1889 at the Theatre Royal in Cardiff. Transitioning to film during the silent era, he contributed to British cinema from 1918 to 1924, amassing credits in at least 15 productions, many adapted from literary works or historical narratives. His film debut came in “Matt” (1918), where he played Squire Monk, followed by roles like Auld Robin Gray in “The Master of Gray” (1918) and “Priest in Rock of Ages” (1918). Douglas frequently embodied authoritative or paternal characters, as seen in his portrayal of Reverend Fleming in Broken “Shadows” (1919), Joseph Montague in “Darby and Joan” (1919), and Reverend Farrant in “Dangerous Lies” (1921). Later highlights include Hilbert Torrington in “Out to Win” (1923) and the Cardinal in “The Loves of Mary, Queen of Scots” (1923), a film preserved in the BFI National Archive. His final known screen appearance was as Mr. Mitchell in the serial “Hurricane Hutch in Many Adventures” (1924) a 15-chapter action serial. Details of his personal life, birth, death, and later years remain scarce, but Douglas's work exemplifies the transition from Victorian theatre to the burgeoning British film industry.

As mentioned above Ernest A. Douglas appeared in one Euro-western, “Hurricane Hutch in Many Adventures” as Mr. Mitchell in 1924.
