Spaghetti Western Director ~ Claude Autant-Lara

Claude Autant-Lara was a French film director known for
his provocative literary adaptations and satirical critiques of bourgeois
society that marked French cinema in the 1940s and 1950s. Born on August 5,
1901, in Luzarches, France, he began his career as a set designer and art
director, collaborating with directors such as Marcel L'Herbier and Jean Renoir
on influential silent films before directing his first feature, Ciboulette, in
1933. He achieved international recognition after World War II with “Le Diable
au corps” (Devil in the Flesh, 1947), a controversial adaptation starring
Gérard Philipe and Micheline Presle that challenged moral conventions and
became a symbol of postwar generational rebellion. During his most prolific
period, Autant-Lara directed more than thirty feature films, many drawn from
classic literature and noted for their sharp dialogue, strong plotting, and
irreverent tone. Highlights include “L'Auberge rouge” (The Red Inn, 1951), “Le
Rouge et le Noir” (The Red and the Black, 1954), “La Traversée de Paris”
(Crossing of Paris, 1956) starring Jean Gabin and Bourvil, and “En cas de Malheur”
(Love Is My Profession, 1958) with Brigitte Bardot and Gabin. These works often
sparked debate or censorship for their bold treatment of themes such as
adultery, hypocrisy, and wartime conduct, establishing him as a leading figure
in the "tradition of quality" in French filmmaking. His influence
waned with the rise of the French New Wave, which he openly criticized as
misguided, and his later career saw fewer successes, with his final film “Gloria”
appearing in 1977. In his later years, Autant-Lara engaged in far-right
politics, serving briefly as a Member of the European Parliament for the
National Front in 1989 before resigning amid scandal over inflammatory remarks.
He died on February 5, 2000, in Antibes, France.
Claude Autant-Lara directed only one Euro-western “The
Origin of Fire” in 1929.

Spaghetti Western Screenwriter ~
Jochen Bludau

Jochen Bludau is a German actor,
screenwriter, producer, and theater manager best known for his decades-long
leadership and performances at the Karl-May-Spiele open-air festival in Elspe,
Germany, where he shaped adaptations of Karl May's Western stories for the
stage. Born on July 2, 1941 in Krefeld-Hüls, North Rhine-Westphalia, he began
performing at Elspe as early as 1958, initially in the role of Winnetou before
becoming closely associated with Old Shatterhand and Kara Ben Nemsi, and later
introducing shows in character as Karl May himself. He also contributed as a
writer of stage scripts, emphasizing stunt work, speech training, and thematic
depth in his productions. Bludau served as the long-time managing director of
the Elspe Festival, guiding its evolution from the late 1960s onward into a
broader entertainment venue that incorporated stunts, animals, and additional
attractions while maintaining a focus on Karl May's works; he notably engaged
Pierre Brice for several seasons and later established the festival's
independent identity. In addition to his theater work, he wrote for television,
including the 1973 TV movie “Unter Geiern – Der Geist des Llano Estacado”, and
produced the 1993 comedy feature “Texas – Doc Snyder hält die Welt” in Atem. He
stepped down from festival management in 2019 after multiple terms in the role.
Bludau died on March 9. 2023 in Elspe at the age of 81. His influence on the
Karl May theater tradition was widely acknowledged, including through the 2013
“Scharlih” honorary award from the Karl-May-Archiv Göttingen, and he was
remembered as a pragmatic, humorous figure instrumental in sustaining and
expanding the Elspe Festival for over five decades.
