MGM has reached
agreement to participate in three coproductions that will partner Ocean Films
of Spain with Italian and French filmmakers. Ocean chief exec Jaime Comas
negotiated the agreement with Metro Continental toppers David Lewis and Mac
Atas and will leave to finalize documents in N.Y.
Three
film-pact will jump off early in April with “Joaquin Murieta,” a remake of a
Rio Grande western that MGM filmed with Anne Baxter in 1936. George Sherman
will direct with the cast headed by Rory Calhoun and Richard Conte (here
co-starring in “Circus World).

Valladolid’s
ninth Int’l Film Week of Religious and Human Values is inviting “The Cardinal”
and “Lillies of the Field” as Yank entries at the April 12-19 fest… Canned Film
Festival director Favre Le Bret flew in to gander Samuel Bronston’s
“Fall of the Roman Empire”… Richard Conte turned down “Joaquin Murieta”
remake western but likes director-writer Juan Antonio Bardem’s offer to
star in the screen adaptation of Henri Francois Rey’s “Piano Mecanique”
(player piano)… Bardem is also slated to direct a Metro remake of

“Murieta,”
Spanish-made western about the California bandit, has been acquired by Warner
Bros. with a Labor Day release set. Jeffrey Hunter and Arthur Kennedy
head cast. Single-name title evidently stems from fact another film on same
character, using full title of “Joaquin Murieta,” was also made as
Spanish-Italian coproduction about same time with Rory Calhoun in title
role…
