King of the Royal Mounted is a Canadian Mounty on horseback, Red Jacket is the protagonist of adventures that oscillate between the western and the detective genre. The character was born in 1935 as a Sunday page for King Features Syndicate thanks to the texts of the famous writer of western novels Zane Grey and drawings by Allan Dean. The series was first published on February 17, 1935 in the Sunday Supplements of the New York Journal-American. On March 2, 1936, the daily strips also appeared, again drawn by Dean, while the Sunday strip passed to Charles Flanders, who in 1938 replaced him permanently. Jim Gary finally takes over in March 1939, who continues the series (with scripts by Gaylord DuBois and sometimes alternating with John Wade Hampton, Rodlow Willard and Bill Lignante) until the suspension occurred in February 1954. In 1942 the character inspires two films played by Allen Lane and directed by William Witney and John English. In Italy the series was published in various newspapers with the name AUDAX as early as 1935; during the fascist period Sergeant King was temporarily renamed Marshal Rossi.
