Who Are Those Guys? ~ Antonio Conteras, Domingo Contreras

When the scene at the Betterville Prison Camp was filmed in Carazo, Spain they needed musicians to play the parts of the Betterville Band. A call went out to all the local towns and posters were printed and passed out looking for actual musicians to fill the roles.

Two of the band members were Antonio and Domingo Contreras who were only teenagers at the time. They filled the roles of the violin and harmonica players. Today Domingo still well remembered that sequence, the current pastor of the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Burgos. Contreras auditioned because they were seeking people who could play an instrument and were hard pressed for extras, he recalls. His excellent performance in the role made them chose him for extreme close up in the film. When director Sergio Leone asked the brothers to cry during their closeups they were given eye drops to show tears steaming down their cheeks.
