Remembering Ethel Rojo

Ethel Inés Rojo Castro was born in Santiago del Estero, Argentina on December 23, 1937 She is the sister of actress Gogó Rojo [1942- ]. A versatile performer Ethel was a longtime star of the Argentine stage and screen. She took to show business early, winning several beauty contests while still a young girl, and after a screen test was hired by a Buenos Aires television station in 1954. Ethel spent the next five years as a dancer at the Maipo Theatre before making her film debut in "Poor But Honest" (1955). In 1959 Ethel left for Spain where she starred in a travelling revue entitled "Broadway Rhythms". She then went to Hollywood for a brief time and was seen in two episodes of the "Boris Karloff Show" then after some television appearances in Mexico she returned to Spain where she headlined at the Martin Theatre. Over the next decade Ethel divided her time between Europe and Argentina, where she earned praise in the principal venues of Spain and Italy as well as at the famed Lido of Paris. Rojo appeared in a number of movies including two Euro-westerns: "Minnesota Clay" (1964) and “Massacre at Fort Grant" (1965). Returning home in 1973 she starred in the popular revue "El Maipo Superstar" and continued her movie work. She became a regular on the Argentine small screen and scored a hit in the 1997 stage production "Poor Angels", and with time reduced her schedule. Ethel was honored with a 2004 gala commemorating the golden anniversary of her debut and earned her final credit with the 2009 "Luisa". Rojo died following a long battle with multiple myeloma earlier this year on June 24th. Today we remember Ethel Rojo on what would have been her 75^th birthday.
