Who are Those Guys - Relja Bašić
Relja Bašić was born on February 14, 1930 in Zagreb, Croatia, Yugoslavia. Bašić is one of the most prolific and versatile Croatian actors with a career which lasted for more than half a century. He attended and graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb in 1955. He first appeared on screen in 1954 classic film "Koncert". Through the decades, he played many different roles in many different films and often in international co-productions. He never became a star, but remained one of the most recognizable and dependable character actors in Yugoslavian film. His specialty were the roles of suave aristocratic villains, especially in historic films dealing with World War II, but his best remembered role is Mr. Fulir in the 1970 cult musical comedy "Tko pjeva zlo ne misli". He appeared in 56 domestic title and 71 foreign films.Bašić was also a member of the Croatian National Theater from 1955 until 1967 appearing in over 4213 performances in 340 cities and towns. In the theater he also became an artistic director. Among his many films was "The Taste of Violence" (1961) with Robert Hossein.
In the 1990s, Relja Bašić was an enthusiastic supporter of the Croatian Social Liberal Party. During the 1992 parliamentary elections he appeared as that party’s candidate in one of Zabreb’s constituencies. He lost the race in controversial circumstances. He late won a seat in the Upper House of the Croatian Parliament representing the city of Zagreb. Relja is also a member of the UNESCO Artists for Peace.
