A spaghetti western debuts on Apple’s interactive tablet to give lovers of the duel-stick shooter a chance to take on the Crimson Jackals gang in Cowboy Guns (Chillingo, reviewed for the iPad 2, rated 12+, $2.99).
Through a near top down presentation, gunslingers take control of the Kid, a tough hombre with a tragic past, ready to take on some bandits with his handy six-shooter.
Imagine some cartoony, virtual versions of Little People figures, except packing heat and more ornery, while exploring some sparse western towns.
Use a thumb on the lower left side of the screen to move the hero (with a virtual directional pad) and the other thumb to poke your eyes out after becoming ludicrously aggravated when trying to target and shoot an enemy.
Actually, the other thumb does control another directional pad to rotate the Kid and kind of aim to shoot, but it will take the finesse of a sushi chef to get comfortable with the touch-screen mechanic
I found it easier to just drag and drop Molotov cocktails on thugs such as Rattlesnake Pete rather then pick them off, although the wide spray of an unlocked shotgun helped. I also became mighty fond of the Gatling Gun, but watch out for overheating.
Those who do master the shootouts will spend an equal amount of time collecting dropped ammo and cash from the bad guys and locating stars to upgrade weapons, armor and boots.
During missions, players will talk to townsfolk, save hostages, protect workers, bounty hunt 20 wanted criminals and fight four bosses in vintage frontier locations such as New Nazareth, Purgatory Sands, Robber’s Roost and Williams Ranch.
An added survival mode increase stress levels and breaks up some of occasionally long-winded missions but really makes the targeting issue stick out like my sore thumb.
The good news is the game offers lots of action for the paltry price.
Additionally, an Ennio Morricone-style musical soundtrack will elicit a smile while the "purty" graphics — down to footprints on the scorched ground, nighttime battles, 3D rock structures popping from the screen and lighting effects — mix with cut scenes to really shine on the iPad.
So do I expect perfection for three bucks? Well, of course not partner, I just need a more intuitive way to cut down my enemies to completely appreciate the Cowboy Guns experience.
