'Hatfields & McCoys' earns Emmys

The "Hatfields & McCoys" miniseries
received three Creative Arts Emmys in awards handed out on Saturday in Los
Angeles. The awards received were for outstanding makeup for a miniseries or
movie (non-prosthetic): Mario Michisanti and Francesca Tampieri; outstanding
single-camera picture editing for a miniseries or movie: Don Cassidy for part
two of the miniseries; and outstanding sound mixing for a miniseries or movie:
Stanomir Dragos, Christian Cooke, Brad Zoern.
On Sunday, the miniseries received two more awards: Kevin
Costner for outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or movie and Tom Berenger
for outstanding supporting actor in a miniseries or movie.
"Hatfields & McCoys," which is based on the
late 1800s family feud between the West Virginia Hatfields and the Kentucky
McCoys, received 16 nominations. The Creative Arts Emmys recognizes the
technical aspects of production, reality programs and writing, while the Primetime
Emmy Awards will recognize performances, direction and best overall programs.
On Sunday, the miniseries will be up for best miniseries
or made-for-TV movie (which recognizes the producers, including Tri-State
native Darrell Fetty), as well as nominations for Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton
for outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or movie; Mare Winningham for
outstanding supporting actress in a miniseries or movie; Tom Berenger for
outstanding supporting actor in a miniseries or movie; and Kevin Reynolds for
outstanding directing for a miniseries or movie. Also be on the lookout Sunday
night for former Ashland resident Ashley Judd, who was also nominated for Best
Actress in a miniseries for her work on "Missing."
Kevin Costner, who owns two Oscars, won his first Emmy
for best lead actor in a miniseries or movie for playing "Devil" Anse
Hatfield in History's "Hatfields & McCoys.", “We had to go all
the way to Romania to film this very American story,” Costner said on stage.
“Hatfields & McCoys” was also a major player at the
awards ceremony, with co-star Tom Berenger winning for outstanding supporting
actor in a miniseries or movie. The Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a
miniseries or movie went to Berenger’s “Hatfields & McCoys” co-star Kevin Costner. “We had to go all the way to
Romania to film this very American story,” Costner said on stage. “"When I
find good writing, I don't care what medium is in," Costner said when
asked about working in television after being known for his big screen work.
Tom Berenger is great and legendary actor. Tom Berenger (with AL Pacino), is the best actor in the world.
